A Factual Portrayal of Indira Gandhi Amid Controversy 2024

Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, which portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is generating significant discussion ahead of its release, initially scheduled for September 6 but delayed pending certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Historian Makkhan Lal, invited as a “subject expert” to assess the film, praised it as both “factual” and “sympathetic,” suggesting that even the Congress party couldn’t have crafted a better historical portrayal of Gandhi.

Lal, who co-authored history textbooks for the NCERT during the NDA-I government, acknowledged his own reservations about the Congress but stressed the importance of presenting historical facts accurately. “The film remains true to the facts and does not deviate even 0.01%,” he asserted, describing it as one of the most sympathetic representations of a political leader he has seen. He believes the film respects Gandhi’s stature and significance in Indian history.

However, Lal did offer a suggestion regarding the film’s conclusion. He noted that the film ends with Gandhi’s death, which he felt could be problematic. Instead, he proposed that the filmmakers should include a brief segment—20 to 30 seconds—illustrating the aftermath of her assassination, particularly Rajiv Gandhi’s controversial statement about a fallen tree and the subsequent violence against Sikhs. He emphasized that this inclusion would prevent the film from being perceived as one-sided and would provide a more balanced historical perspective.

Lal has formally submitted his suggestion to the CBFC in a detailed three-and-a-half-page note. His intent is to ensure that the film accurately reflects the events surrounding Gandhi’s death and the ensuing chaos, which could offer viewers a fuller understanding of the period.

In response to these controversies, Lal defended the film, suggesting that the character of Bhindranwale should not be viewed as representative of the entire Sikh community. He argued, “Bhindranwale is an individual, not a collective noun. Where is the question of misrepresentation?” His stance highlights the complexity of historical representation in media and the challenges filmmakers face when addressing sensitive political topics.

The film, which Ranaut has written and stars in, features a talented cast that includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Choudhary, and the late Satish Kaushik. With a screenplay crafted by Ritesh Shah, Emergency aims to provide a nuanced perspective on a pivotal moment in Indian history.
