The incident took place as the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) chief was engaged in his ‘Memanta Siddham’ Lok Sabha poll 2024 canvassing bus tour, addressing the public at Vivekananda School Centre in Singh Nagar, Vijayawada, as reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Reports suggest that the stone struck Chief Minister Reddy with significant force, leading onlookers to immediately apply pressure to his forehead with a handkerchief. The projectile is suspected to have been launched from a catapult, although details about the perpetrators remain unclear.

Reddy, who suffered a small cut above his eye, was promptly attended to by a doctor inside the campaign bus. Despite the attack, the Chief Minister demonstrated resilience by resuming his tour through the city, where he continued to engage with the public for nearly four hours.

The YSRCP leadership has pointed fingers at the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), alleging its involvement in the assault. Earlier during the campaign, Reddy had criticized TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu for neglecting the handloom weavers’ community during his previous tenure.

“Chandrababu ignored the industry (weavers community) in his previous term, but the current government has supported them over the last five years,” remarked Reddy, emphasizing the significance of Mangalagiri weavers in the Telugu-speaking states for their craftsmanship.

Jagan Mohan Reddy’s campaign bus tour spans 21 days, covering a distance from Idupulupaya in Kadapa district to Icchapuram in Srikakulam district, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls 2024. The state elections for the 175-member Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh are scheduled for May 13, with the vote count slated for June 4.

The attack on Reddy highlights the tense atmosphere surrounding the elections, with political parties vying for power and influence in the state. Incidents of violence and intimidation can disrupt the democratic process and raise concerns about the safety of candidates and voters alike.

The YSRCP’s allegations against the TDP underscore the deep-rooted rivalries and animosities that characterize Andhra Pradesh’s political landscape. As the campaign intensifies, tensions are likely to escalate, necessitating heightened security measures to safeguard candidates and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Despite the setback, Chief Minister Reddy remains undeterred in his mission to connect with voters and garner support for his party’s electoral campaign. His determination to continue the tour despite the attack reflects his commitment to fulfilling his political responsibilities and engaging directly with the electorate.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various quarters, with political leaders and citizens alike expressing solidarity with Chief Minister Reddy and condemning acts of violence in the electoral context. The safety of political leaders and candidates is paramount to the smooth conduct of elections and the preservation of democratic norms.

The attack on Jagan Mohan Reddy serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and risks associated with electoral politics in India. Incidents of violence can undermine public confidence in the electoral process and undermine the principles of democracy.

As the election date approaches, it is imperative for political parties and law enforcement agencies to collaborate closely to ensure the security and well-being of all stakeholders involved in the electoral process. This includes taking proactive measures to identify and address potential security threats and prevent further incidents of violence.
